Control Your Keys

Giving out a key to your property is a big deal. Whether you are an apartment manager, small business owner, or even homeowner, you need assurances that keyholders will respect your security. This includes returning the key when the time comes, and not making any unauthorized copies! It is cheap and easy to get a key copied. There are many way to deter or prevent keyholders from making unauthorized copies. Only some are effective.

My keyholders are prohibited by my policies from making key copies- FAIL
There is no physical restriction from making a copy. Nearly any copying service will make a key copy without ever knowing about your policies.

My keys are marked "Do not duplicate"- FAIL
"Do not duplicate" is a request with no legal weight to it. There are no requirements to honor this request and no penalties for duplicating the keys. Why? Well, a third party locksmith has no means to verify who actually can duplicate the key. Without full information, the request is overly-burdensome for us to honor.

My locksmith provided keys with "Do not duplicate" on one side, and my organization name and phone number on the other side- PASS, low
With the identification of the "originator" marked on the key, you can now expect your request to be honored by all ethical locksmiths. California Business and Professions code requires this. However, you still have almost no protections from unethical behavior. For example, a keyholder might cover or grind away your markings. Also, automatic key kiosks cannot reliably detect these markings, so they will often make the key anyways.

My locksmith provided me with Restricted or Proprietary keys- PASS, high
A restricted or proprietary key blank cannot be purchased by unauthorized persons. Only properly approved dealers can carry these keys. These contracts are very important to locksmiths; they are one of the most basic tenants of our business model! You can be assured that restricted key systems set up by a licensed locksmith will remain secure. The entire key system will be professionally overseen to ensure complete success, and no additional keys can ever be made without your specific written permission. There is a relatively high set-up cost for this, as all of your locks will need to be replaced or modified to accept the new key system.

I use a keyless access control system- PASS, high
A "keyholder" cannot copy a key they never possessed. By allowing PIN code or keycard access to your property, you can prevent giving out keys to most users. It is still recommended to provide a small number of carefully selected individuals to carry an "override key" to allow access to your property in the event of a lock and/or power failure.
